Open Houses are fun community events that encourage public participation in protecting the environment by featuring facility tours, trash truck and equipment demonstrations, information booths, recycling games with prizes, giveaways and refreshments. The city’s recycling mascots, Mr. Recycle and Robo Blue will be on hand to engage and bring recycling to life for both children and adults. Young visitors will also be given the opportunity to plant small vegetables.
Additionally, City Plants will provide FREE shade trees to residents who live in or own property in the City of Los Angeles. Since the inventory of trees will be limited, they will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis until supplies run out. Identification will be required to verify city residency. There is a limit of one tree per property address.
In conjunction with the free tree giveaways, LA Sanitation will also distribute free mulch that is recycled from its green waste program.
Used tires will also be collected at each Open House. However, a maximum of 9 tires per person per trip will be collected and only passenger and light truck tires will be accepted. Tires from businesses and tires on rims will NOT be accepted. This used tire collection is made possible by a CalRecycle Grant and tires will be processed for beneficial reuse.
Last year, over 6,700 residents visited LA Sanitation yards to learn about recycling programs and services. Some 300 city employees volunteer their time at Sanitation Open Houses to ‘give back’ to the community
