For the second year in a row, LA Law Library is celebrating National Law Day by offering a full week of clinics and workshops, April 28th – May 2nd.
Aiming to “empower” the citizens of L.A., LA Law Library will offer a fully packed week of interesting and useful educational programs, classes and presentations. Just a partial list of offerings calendared includes a presentation by a distinguished panel of law school scholars who are experts in the areas of voting rights and election law, programs led by specialists who will guide participants on the legal and logistical steps when forming and operating a small business, insights on how to set up a nonprofit, legal do’s and don’ts for landlords (tenants could benefit from these workshops too,) and an overview of the resources available at the newly renovated and recently reopened Patriotic Hall where important services for LA’s veterans will be available. On Friday May 2, volunteer lawyers will also be on site offering 20 minute consultations.
Additional events are aimed at teachers, students and parents with program offerings featuring an interactive program discussion on legal issues impacting teens as well as an opportunity to join in on a curriculum enhanced voting rights simulation in honor of this year’s Law Day theme “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.” Specifically designed with high school students in mind, teachers and students throughout Southern CA are being encouraged to participate in this collaborative effort to educate today’s youth on the voting issues related to the restriction of voting by Race, Citizenship, Gender, Native American, Poll Taxes and Age. The elections simulation will relate to those taking place in 1864 Lincoln v. McClellan, 1916 Wilson v. Hughes, 1952 Eisenhower v. Stevenson, and 1964 Johnson v. Goldwater.
