LA Animal Services

Dear Friends:

I am the President of the Los Angeles Board of Animal Services Commissioners. The Board advocates for people and animals living safely together in the City of Los Angeles and sets policy for, and oversees, the City’s Animal Services Department. Each year, the Board visits each of our six shelters in order to hear from the residents in the nearby communities, and make it easier for the public to participate and share their views and concerns regarding animal issues.

On April 22, 2014, we will be holding our next Commission Meeting at the Chesterfield Square Animal Care Center, which is located at 1850 West 60th Street in Los Angeles, southwest of the intersection of Western Avenue and Slauson Avenue. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. (There also will be a tour of the state-of-the-art shelter starting at 6:15.)

The Chesterfield Square Shelter opened in 2013 to serve the communities of Arlington Heights, Arlington Park, Baldwin Hills, Crenshaw, Exposition Park, Gramercy Park, Lafayette Square, Jefferson Park, Koreatown, Leimert Park, Mid-City, Miracle Mile, Pico-Union, South Los Angeles, University Park, Vermont Knolls, West Adams and other nearby areas. Among other recent developments, the Department broke ground last November on a dog annex near the shelter which should be completed later this year, and a spay/neuter clinic is scheduled to open at the shelter soon to serve the community.

These are exciting times for Animal Services. The Department’s euthanasia rate has dropped dramatically in the past two years, the lives saved rate is up, the City recently passed and the Department began enforcing a landmark mill-bred pet store ban, and we are making progress on many other fronts.

The agenda for this meeting will be posted on April 18 on the Department website: www.laanimalservices.com. (Go to “About Us” and then click on “Commission.”) We will be discussing the Department’s spay and neuter programs and other topics. As always, we will have a general public comment period so that we can hear from you directly on any topics within the Board’s jurisdiction. If you would like to speak, please be sure to fill out and turn in your comment card as soon as you arrive.

Please consider joining us and also spread the word to any community groups, block clubs and other similar organizations that you believe may have interest. We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you,

David Zaft
