kids-fly-la-2910-840After a successful first Make Music Day in the United States in 2013, Make Music LA is partnering with Caricabela Los Angeles to bring the Carnival spirit to Make Music Day 2014. This initiative will encourage neighborhoods to host a city-wide network of Carnival-themed block parties on June 21, 2014. Caricabela has been bringing Carnival traditions to Los Angeles for over 15 years, and president Marie Kellier believes that its mission of bridging the gap across cultures and traditions through music and arts-based education meshes well with MMLA’s core values of cross-cultural enrichment through art and music.

Make Music Day is based on France’s Fête de la Musique, a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982. The festival has become an international phenomenon celebrated on the same day in more than 460 cities in 110 countries, including Germany, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Australia, Vietnam, Congo, Cameroon, Fiji, Colombia, Chile, Nepal, and Japan. Last year, Angelenos celebrated Make Music Day with a day filled with live acoustic concerts in Silver Lake’s Sunset Triangle Plaza. All the instruments were human-powered, with no reliance on microphones or amps, and most of the acts were locally-based.

This year, MMLA encourages neighbors to celebrate music and arts with Carnival-themed block parties throughout the city on Make Music Day.

Some suggestions for themed décor and activities:

  • · Potluck meals
  • · Costumes and headdresses from household materials and scraps
  • · Musical instruments made from paper, cardboard, and other simple materials
