  1. Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance of the United States.
  2. Roll Call (Quorum call)
  3. Comments of the Chair (President and Education Committee Chair) of the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council
  4. No Public Comment prior to the special event.
  5. New BusinessIntroduction of the First Van Nuys Education Summit.
    • Policies, Programs, Reforma.
      • Scott Schmerelson – LAUSD School Board member, District 3, just recently elected to the board is fresh with ideas to share with the stakeholders of Van Nuys.
      • Mónica Ratliff – LAUSD School Board member, District 6, will speak on her experience as both a board member and a teacher, and what she thinks needs to be accomplished in our schools.
      • Office of Senator Hertzberg – A representative will speak on what Senator Hertzberg is doing for education including SB 791 and the Upward Mobility Act.
      • Office of Adrin Nazarian will update the community on state legislation and policies related to education.
      • Office of Nury Martinez – Field Deputy Guillermo Marquez, will update the community on Councilwoman Martinez’s work in the schools so far.f. Robina Suwol is the founder of California Safe Schools and will be talking about her experience and the role she plays in our schools.
    • It takes a village…involvement on all levels
      • Why involvement on all levels is so important, NCADD Coordinator Sandy Logan, will be speaking about the services she provides for free to schools to help parents and students learn coping skills and deter youth from using drugs.
      • RTI – what is it and how can it help our students – Dr. Susan Tandberg, now the Valerio St. Elementary Principal, will speak on her experience as director of the program.
      • A community is stronger when all of its members participate and are valued, no one believes that more than the organization, Tierra Del Sol. Intake coordinator, Aaron Riner will be speaking on the Nexus program, which enables people with disabilities to access and achieve a post-secondary education.
    •  Opportunities and Goals
      • Enrich LA – Tomas O’Grady is the founder of Enrich LA, a nonprofit that builds edible gardens in schools. Tomas will speak on the innovative disruption in our public schools.
      • Jason Youngblood from National College Planners will discuss the process of setting educational goals, applying to and paying for college and how agencies like NCP make going to college a real possibility regardless of status.
      • Stacey Lynn Rains – School Representative and Chair of the Education committee will share the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council education committee goals and describe the game plan for moving forward.
