The City of Los Angeles has long been a participant in the March of Dimes annual March for Babies campaign. When you walk, you give hope to the babies born too soon or sick. The March of Dimes has been walking since 1970 and has raised nearly $3 billion. The tremendous efforts of their supporters directly resulted in the funding of 12 potentially life-saving research grants in Greater Los Angeles totaling $2.7 million in 2014. The money raised from the March for Babies supports programs in our communities that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies; and it funds research to find answers to the serious problems that threaten our babies. This year I am happy to be the Department’s coordinator.
As part of the March for Babies campaign the March of Dimes helps moms that have full-term pregnancies and research the problems that threaten the health of their babies. In local communities across the country, the March of Dimes is helping moms take charge of their health, and supporting families when something goes wrong. The March of Dimes National guidelines for newborn screening were issued to help promote consistency among states so that all babies are screened for life-threatening identifiable, but treatable, disorders regardless of where they live. The March of Dimes also acts globally: sharing best practices in perinatal health and helping improve birth outcomes where the needs are the most urgent.
