The Van Nuys Neighborhood Council was happy to engage with seniors and the offices of elected officials by participating in the Emergency Preparedness Fair that was held at the Bernandi Senior Center on Thursday, September 29th. VNNC Vice President Kathy Schreiner kicked off the formal program by introducing Council Member Paul Krekorian (CD 2). Schreiner noted that this is only the second public event that the VNNC has participated in since the start of the pandemic and that it “felt good.” After other cosponsors were introduced, Schreiner introduced Assistant LAFD Chief Guy Tomlinson to present, along with two veteran LAFD CERT instructors, a one-hour workshop on emergency preparedness.

Schreiner was joined in staffing a table by VNNC Board Member Danielle Rouillard. They talked about the VNNC and shared two VNNC promotional items related to safety for seniors: a magnifying glass for reading small print and a safety whistle on a lanyard that seniors can wear on walks and use to summon help if they feel unsafe.

The event was co-hosted by Councilmember Paul Krekorian and Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, who were on hand to greet attendees. Also co-hosting, in addition to the VNNC, were FEMA, Congressman Tony Cardenas, City Council President Nury Martinez, LAFD, LAPD, LADWP, SERA Collection Research Services (providing free vaccinations), Valley InterCommunity Council, and Anthem. Thank you to all who came out for this informative event.
