Councilmember Imelda Padilla spoke at the groundbreaking on February 5 for median improvements:
This groundbreaking is a major win for Van Nuys, transforming a simple median into a vibrant green space that puts people’s safety and accessibility first.
With safer crossings, new trees, and greener infrastructure, this project supports neighbors who rely on this corridor every day.
Proud to move this work forward with our partners as we build safer, greener, and more connected streets for our community.
We first heard about this project to capture rain run off and improve the median in August 2024.
The median is located on the west side of Sepulveda Blvd. between Lemay and Haynes. VNNC has had complaints for years about all the trash that collected in the grass on the median. It will be planted with native trees and plants.
VNNC President Kathy Schreiner said “Van Nuys is happy to have a project that beautifies the area, provides environmental benefits (such as cleaning stormwater before it goes into the sewer), and includes trees whose shade will be helpful on hot days.” Also, the median is located in an area with a lot of multifamily buildings, so many residents will experience the benefits of having this new attractive green space in their neighborhood.
There were four VNNC Board Members present — Kathy Schreiner, John Camera, Quirino de la Cuesta, and Francois Verin.
