Not-to-Be-Missed Events at the 8th Annual Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair

A FIFTH speaker was recently added to the Speakers Series at the October 3, 2015, Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair. In addition to LAFD Paramedic/Captain Stacy Gerlich, Dr. Kate Hutton, Dr. Jill Barnes, and Mr. Tim Kneeland, MySafe:LA will present a 30-minute talk designed for seniors 55 and older: Preparing for Fire Safety and Other Disasters. Participants will receive a free goodie bag, courtesy of MySafe:LA. All talks will be in the Fire Station’s Community Room, starting at 10:30 am, with the MySafe:LA talk commencing at 1:30 pm.

There’s so much to learn at the Fair! Here are just a few examples of the skills you can acquire:

  • Proper method to use a fire extinguisher on small fires (CERT response trailer).
  • How extrication, using cribbing techniques, is performed (CERT response trailer).
  • Compression-only (“sidewalk”) CPR (demonstrated by several exhibitors).
  • Disaster cooking via Dutch oven (yummy samples available!).
  • Pet safety and preparedness.
  • How animals are rescued by the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Services.
  • Which insects transmit diseases (“vectors”).
  • First aid techniques that you can learn and practice, as demonstrated by the Boy Scouts.
  • Utility safety from the Gas Company and LADWP.

Please encourage your stakeholders, family, and friends to register and attend! Everything at the Fair is free, thanks to our generous supporters and contributors, including many Neighborhood Councils throughout Los Angeles.

For more details, or if your NC would like to host an Outreach booth at the Fair, send an email to [email protected]. Don’t miss this great opportunity to communicate with your stakeholders.

Thank you for helping all of Los Angeles get prepared for disasters.
