FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH: NEW 90-BED SHELTER OPENING TO HELP LA HOMELESS FAMILIES
‘Home Again’ Family Shelter Ribbon Cutting Comes One Year After Devastating Fire Destroyed the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission
WHO: The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission is hosting a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate a new 90-bed, 16,000 square foot facility called “Home Again,” built to offer a safe and nurturing environment for families that are facing the challenges of being homeless.
WHEN: Monday, June 29, 10:30am Media tours (Program begins, 11:15am)
WHERE: Home Again Family Shelter, 8756 Canby Ave., Northridge 91325
WHY: For the Valley’s homeless families who depend upon shelter and food from the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, May 3, 2014 was a devastating day. A fire broke out and completely destroyed its emergency family shelter, most of its vehicle fleet, and the clothing and food warehouse.
Now, due to the generous efforts of the local community, the San Fernando Rescue Mission has been able to collect the much of the donations needed to design and build a brand new facility. This new resource will enable the San Fernando Valley to realize a reduction of its homeless population, many of whom are neglected, and underserved. Staff will work with families to establish a plan for restoration and self-sufficiency, offering life skills programs and training on-site for up to 12 months, as well as collaborating with other agencies and community resources.
PHOTO OP: Opportunities to conduct interviews with Mission leadership, City Councilmembers, and shelter guests moving into the new facility, which contains private family bedrooms, a commercial kitchen, common dining room and living spaces, meeting rooms, computer education center, playground and garden – all geared toward helping families achieve a brighter future. Additionally, shelter staff and city councilmember’s will be on hand as well. To learn more, please visit www.sfvrescuemission.org.
