LA Budget Chair Paul Krekorian’s Statement on Mayor’s Budget Proposal

Budget Chair Seeks to Continue Fiscally Sustainable Path

LOS ANGELES– Councilmember Paul Krekorian, chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, issued the following statement after Mayor Eric Garcetti released his proposed 2015-16 budget proposal:

“Los Angeles had some extremely challenging years during the economic recession. Our budget deficit ballooned and we were even threatened with bankruptcy. When I took office in 2010, the projected deficit for this year was over $1 billion, but we are no longer on the precipice. Through years of hard work and tough choices, we have eliminated 80 percent of our structural deficit and built up the strongest reserve fund in the city’s history.

“I look forward to working with the Mayor on his second proposed budget and continuing the work we did together last year. We passed a balanced budget and also took modest steps toward restoring infrastructure and much-needed services to residents. I’m confident we can do even more with this budget.

“On April 28, the Budget and Finance Committee will begin two and a half weeks of hearings where we’ll go through the proposed budget with a fine tooth comb, hear from each city department about their needs, and listen to the public’s input. My goal is to adopt a budget that reflects our city’s values and commitment to public safety and neighborhood services, and is also fiscally responsible.”

City budget hearings begin Tuesday, April 28, 1 p.m. in John Ferraro Council Chamber, Room 340, City Hall, 200 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
