ALLIGATOR FOUND IN VAN NUYS
On January 12, 2015, Animal Control Officers from the Los Angeles Animal Services Department served a search warrant in the 13200 Block of Sylvan Street after receiving a tip of an approximately 10 foot long alligator observed in the rear yard of the Van Nuys’ residence.
In late 2014, Animal Control Officers were informed of a possible alligator at the same location. After a complete search of the property at that time, no alligator could be located. Officers planned for a “surprise” follow-up visit in case the alligator had been relocated to avoid capture by the resident. This visit came last Monday. The resident refused the officers entry to inspect and a search warrant was immediately obtained and served. An approximate 8-foot long alligator was located in a covered box in the rear yard. The alligator is estimated to be nearly 40 years old.
Also located in the box with the alligator were what appeared to be two carcasses of deceased cats. The carcasses were impounded along with the alligator. Staff members from the Los Angeles Zoo, who specialize in large reptiles, assisted with impounding and transporting of the alligator.
It is illegal to keep wildlife without a permit in the City of Los Angeles. Animal Services is now conducting a full criminal investigation and it is expected that a case will be presented to the City Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
