Los Angeles Continuum of Care Awarded $91,956,831 in

FY 2014 Homeless Assistance Grants

Los Angeles, CA, January 27, 2015 – The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), lead agency for the L.A. Continuum of Care, today announced U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Homeless Housing and Services awards will provide $91,956,831in funding to 232 projects in Los Angeles City and County, including the largest new grant in the country – $10,120,541 awarded to support 550 units of permanent supportive housing rental assistance for chronically homeless individuals.

The grant was awarded to the Los Angeles Continuum through a national competition for bonus funding, in which Los Angeles received the maximum award possible. The FY 2014 awards also include $6,915,158 in funding for other new projects, providing 376 units of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless people and 74 units of rapid re-housing assistance for homeless families. These new grants were generated by strategically reallocating Continuum resources from older grants to increase their efficiency.

“This $10 million in new homeless assistance funding is a strong vote of confidence by our Federal partners in the work Los Angeles has undertaken to end homelessness. These grants provide critical funding to house and support our homeless neighbors,” said Executive Director Peter Lynn, Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). “These new projects will help more than 1,100 men, women and children move into permanent housing over the next year. LA can effectively compete for new funds and can efficiently reallocate the funding we already have to put it to best use housing our community’s most vulnerable.”

LAHSA Commission Chair Kerry Morrison also acknowledged the importance of these awards. “On the eve of the homeless count, where we so clearly see the need for more resources in LA County, $17 million in awards for additional permanent housing presents a significant and much needed boost in funding for the region. These awards will help our community partners to accelerate our progress toward ending homelessness in Los Angeles.”

U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro has awarded $1.8 billion in grants to help nearly 8,400 local homeless housing and service programs across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A complete list of the state and local homeless projects awarded funding can be found at the link below.

HUD funding will continue to support programs that provide opportunities for stable housing to people experiencing homelessness and provide service support to help individuals and families retain their housing long term.
