The Los Angeles District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is seeking public input on a proposal that would provide two recreation zones, this summer and for the next four summers, along the Los Angeles River. The proposal includes a program that would offer guided and unguided non-motorizes boating access in the Sepulveda Basin area of the river, in addition to the program that will operate in the Glendale Narrows. “I fully support positive and environmentally friendly recreational programs along every part of our precious waterway,” said Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell. “I am thrilled that there might be even more opportunities for Angelenos to enjoy the River this summer.” O’Farrell is the Chair of the City’s Arts, Parks, Health, Aging, and Los Angeles River Committee.
Both programs would operate starting from Memorial Day through early- to mid-September 2014, and seasonally for four years thereafter. The USACE would grant licenses, and then offer a lease. The Corps will prepare an Environmental Assessment to analyze the environmental impacts of the proposed action and alternatives. “I am excited to see the USACE taking action to increase recreational access in the LA River for the San Fernando Valley,” said Councilwoman Nury Martinez. “As the former Executive Director of Pacoima Beautiful, I believe in projects that both educate our local residents and encourage them to enjoy the natural habitat of the Sepulveda Basin.” The Public Notice and Expression of Interest can be found on the USACE website.
