VNNC Calls for Postal Truck Air Conditioning

Van Nuys Neighborhood Council made headlines in the Daily News by calling for air conditioning in US Postal Carrier trucks after a carried died in the line of duty during the extreme heat this summer in Woodland Hills.

“What happened in Woodland Hills can happen in Van Nuys – it gets to be 120, 115 degrees,” said George Thomas, president of the Van Nuys Neighborhood Council. “They’re out delivering the mail and these trucks are not equipped with air conditioning units at all.”

After considerable debate, VNNC approved issuing a call to action to Congressman Tony Cárdenas, who we hope can introduce federal legislation. Subsequently, the Daily News reported:

U.S. Congressman Tony Cárdenas said he’s “deeply saddened” that a U.S. Postal Service carrier died in her mail truck in Woodland Hills on a scorching summer day and is “determined” it doesn’t happen again.

“Postal Service trucks should have air-conditioning, especially in the San Fernando Valley, which is one of the hottest parts of (Los Angeles) County,” Cárdenas, D-Panorama City, said in a statement Tuesday.

We are excited that Congressman Cárdenas is taking up this important matter and hope to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Congressman Tony Cardenas Service Academy Event

service-academy-flyer-jpegThere are four United States Service Academies that require Congressional Nominations for consideration for a Service Academy appointment: the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Air Force Academy, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  Each member of Congress is able to make 10 nominations and the Vice President is able to make 5 nominations.

Congressman Tony Cardenas has the honor of nominating eligible applicants for consideration for an appointment at a United States Service Academy. The mission of the U.S. service academy is to provide instruction and experience to all cadets so that they graduate with the knowledge and character essential to leadership and the motivation to become career officers in the U.S. military.

This is a great opportunity for students to attend one of the top colleges in our nation.

If you plan to attend, send me a note and I will make sure to reserve a seat.

Please feel free to share my contact information for questions.  I am here to help and serve.

Thank you all for your time and assistance with this event.
